The Homer Smith Papers consist of the typescript of Smith's "Far North Farming: Alaska vs. Scandinavia," a volume comparing agriculture, agricultural potential, and resource development in the two regions. The main text of this 1972 version differs only slightly from the self-published 1971 version. It does, however, include an interesting new appendix composed of comments received by Smith concerning his ideas for economic development in Alaska.

Homer Smith (1896-) was born in Illinois. His father's family were builders and his mother's family were farmers; he was an architect and a farmer. In 1957, he established a homestead on the Kenai Peninsula. His experiences there prompted him to write two books on the difficulties of horticulture in the 49th state.
